Ecuadorian housing resettlements five years after the 2016 earthquake: A critical analysis

In the past decades, earthquakes have left millions of people without homes across the world. Safe housing is crucial for the long-term wellbeing of the affected population. This article analyses the Ecuadorian housing reconstruction developed after the 7.8 magnitude 2016 earthquake, taking as case study the cities of Portoviejo, Manta, Bahía de Caráquez and Pedernales, located in the Manabí province, which jointly accommodate more than 90% of the resettlements built by the central government. 17. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura della Biennale di Venezia

This dialogue between academia, architects and industry aims to discuss criticalities of post-disasters reconstruction in Latin America and the Global South, and how new visions can be developed. Starting from the NOVA VIDA research project, funded by British Academy and led by the University of Leeds, it discusses how multi-disciplinary approach combining indigenous construction practices, social and cultural preferences can be integrated in the definition of new post-disaster scenarios.
